BA (Hons) Musical Theatre One-Year Top Up

Validated by the University of Portsmouth

This innovative, one-year programme has been designed to enable committed performers to extend their understanding of musical theatre production. The course offers students and practitioners the opportunity to explore aspects of musical theatre not usually addressed in vocational training and provides access to further HE study and enhanced employment opportunity when considering career progression.

The course programme is flexible and adaptable and has been designed to accommodate professional working patterns. Following a two-day Induction at LTA’s Performing Arts Centre, students meet with tutors on one Sunday a month at a Campus Study Day (CSD) for a day of workshops, seminars, lectures and one-to-one tutorials. A comprehensive, online tutorial system ensures students receive full support and guidance from Personal tutors as they work on written research projects in the periods between CSDs.

Running from September to May each year, the course comprises three units: Research and Development in Musical Theatre Practice; Critical Analysis of Musical Theatre in Production and Production in Musical Theatre Practice.

Research and Development in Musical Theatre Practice

In this unit students explore the relationship between historical and current Musical Theatre traditions and create a present day ‘virtual’ production based upon resources, practitioners and creatives drawn from any era. Assessment is by written assignment and verbal presentation.

Critical Analysis of Musical Theatre in Production

In this unit students visit the same professional, musical theatre production on three occasions and carry out a full critical analysis based on the experience of seeing the production from three different time and vantage points. Assessment is by written assignment.

Production and Production in Musical Theatre Practice

In unit three students draw upon their experience of units one and two to stage a short piece of musical theatre. Students may choose to be assessed in performance, choreography or direction, each of which is accompanied by an analytical production notebook and viva.

TESTIMONIALS

“This course has proved to be an ideal platform to develop my individual artistry. The freedom of exploration allows me to tailor my learning to suit my professional needs whilst providing exposure to various career options within the industry.”

Andrew Hudson (2016 graduate)

"This course ignited my desire to explore other avenues within the performing arts. I joined the course as a performer and I graduated as a performer, choreographer, creative and entrepreneur. The course was both challenging and equally rewarding and I am most grateful for how the three units were tailored in such a way that I could continue perusing my professional performing career, whilst I studied."

Claire Seymour (2018 graduate)

"This course has allowed me to broaden my opportunities within the performing arts industry. The alternative ways of thinking encouraged throughout have prompted me to become more intuitive and confident about my own skills. I am able to apply academic learning and performance skills interchangeably. This has lead to the creation of my own, unique, business venture, alongside auditioning and performing. I am more open minded about the future and can see the range of career opportunities related to performing arts that I did not realise were available to me before."

Lily Cooper, (2019 graduate)

"This course not only provided me with the skills and confidence to develop as a performer, but also supported me in my progression as an independent critical thinker which is so important in understanding my craft and the opportunities available to me in the industry as I move forward in my career."

Darcy Aspinall (2019 graduate)
